Koala road kills are linked to landscape attributes on Central Queensland’s Peak Downs Highway

نویسندگان

چکیده

Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) road kills occur frequently along the Peak Downs highway through Clarke-Connors ranges. Highway upgrades allowed mitigation of koala-vehicle collision frequency while maintaining koala population connectivity. This project aimed to understand kill distribution inform protective infrastructure investment. were associated with: (1) streams and alluvia where dominant vegetation included Eucalyptus tereticornis E. platyphylla; (2) ridges supporting drepanophylla open forest/woodland abutting or alluvia; (3) mid-lower slopes, dominated by that dissected minor fringed ± platyphylla. Road did not in on ridge upper crests hills, although koalas this landscape. Explaining why are linked landscape features requires investigation. It is likely that: elements with drainage lines, support a relatively high abundance, hence risk correspondingly higher; engineered architecture verge characteristics these conducive crossing road.

Emergency ambulances on the public highway linked with inconvenience and potential danger to road users.

OBJECTIVES The main aim was to survey interactions between the public highway users and emergency ambulances using lights and sirens. The objectives were to identify negative and positive experiences, and to assess the frequency and consequences of these events. METHODS Because of a poor response from a random postal pilot, a quota sample of 200 was adopted with a response of 65%. This provid...

The Effect of Road Kills on Amphibian Populations

The diurnal movement patterns of Triturus vulgaris, T. cristatus, Pelobates fuscus, Bufo bufo, Rana temporaria, and R. arvalis were investigated during five breeding seasons (1994-1998). Two main questions were addressed: 1) What is the probability of an individual amphibian getting killed when crossing the road? and 2) What fraction of the amphibian populations gets killed by traffic? The rate...

Road to Ruin? A Spatial Analysis of State Highway Spending

Do states engage in infrastructure expenditure competition to attract new economic activity? Economic theory is inconclusive on the matter. States might respond to increased infrastructure spending in competitor states by increasing their own infrastructure spending. Conversely, states may decrease spending in the presence of positive spillovers from competitor states’ infrastructure investment...

Playing with the Highway Experience Pervasive Games on the Road

We explore how the dynamic and vivid context of road travel, i.e. the highway experience, can be used to provide drama and challenge to pervasive games. The aim has been to gain insights into this novel application area and to understand the potential and implications for design. The thesis embraces a design-oriented research approach, where knowledge has been gained through the process of desi...

Second-best Road Pricing Through Highway Franchising

This paper considers the welfare impacts of a range of franchising regimes for congestible highways. For a single road in isolation, it is shown that a competitive auction with the level of road use as the decision criterion produces the socially optimal road (in terms of capacity and toll level) as the equilibrium outcome, provided constant returns to scale characterize highway operations. The...
